Rewriting Your Money Story: The Lessons My Past Taught Me About a Wealthier Future

Jan 08, 2026

A brand new year always brings this mix of anticipation and reflection. Before I jump into planning and momentum, I like to pause and ask: What has shaped me into the woman I am today — particularly when it comes to money?

Growing Up Between Cultures

I was raised in Brisbane by parents who migrated to Australia in search of greater opportunity. My Austrian mother and Macedonian father both came from families with hardship, sacrifice, and very little financial security.

My dad’s idea of a childhood “treat” was bread with water and sugar — if sugar was available. Meanwhile, my daughter today enjoys artisan chocolate. That contrast still blows me away.

Money wasn’t talked about openly in our home, but the stress was visible. And without knowing it, I started forming my own protective patterns.

Becoming the “Squirreler”

While my dad spent money quickly because he never had any, I became the complete opposite — a cautious saver who clung to every dollar “just in case.” Debt terrified me.

I understood fear around money… but not strategy.

A Career That Looked Right — But Felt Wrong

I did the “smart” thing: went to university, got the prestigious job, followed the rules. But two years into my role at a major accounting firm, I was deeply unhappy. It is the only time in my life I can clearly recall feeling depressed — needing three alarms just to get out of bed.

Taking a leap into a consulting career saved me — and showed me how much I love building things, solving problems, and creating space for people.

The Wake-Up Call

Despite my qualifications, I still didn’t know how to manage my own finances. So I hired a financial planner… only to realise he gave the same advice to me and my mother — despite our completely different life stages. Something felt wrong.

I decided to study financial planning for myself — and everything changed.

For the first time, I saw:

  • How accessible investing can actually be

  • That knowledge = power

  • How many women feel confused or ashamed about money

  • That there is a path toward financial security, if someone teaches you how to follow it

The Shift to Money Empowerment

My business grew out of my desire to share what I was learning — in a way that was simple, supportive, and not full of jargon. I designed the Money Pie System because I believe money should feel like one whole life — not a bunch of complicated buckets.

Reconnecting With Joy

Money isn’t just numbers. It fuels lifestyle, joy, and the moments that matter. For me, travel is what lights me up — whether it’s a big overseas adventure or a spontaneous day trip with my daughter.

I want to enjoy my life now while still creating security for my future self.

And Now… It’s Your Turn

Your money story didn’t start with you — but it can be rewritten by you.

As you step into this year, ask yourself:

  • What do I truly want from my life?

  • What brings me joy?

  • What money habits am I ready to release?

  • What choices will future-me thank me for?

There’s no “too late.” There’s only the first step. And I'm right here walking it with you.
